What does the notion of Internet of Things (IoT) refer to?

Simply speaking, the system could be described as a connection of individual devices by means of the Internet in absence of any human being. In principle, data is collected from various sensors and shared via the Internet for further processing and evaluation.

Experts estimate 20 billion IoT devices to be operated worldwide by 2020.

Specifically designed for the Internet of Things, the communication technologies we have been using (LPWAN) feature in particular extremely low power consumption, long-time battery operation, transmission of low amount of data and long coverage range. Geofencing

Geofencing, also called Circuit participation check, is the system monitoring employees’ location (i.e. whether they are in the places assigned). The monitoring is ensured via a company mobile phone that is sending time and location data, using GPS. Consequently, it provides us with information on the relevant employee’s location and on the time he came there and left.

Machine Tracking

Also known as Mobile machines monitoring. Machine Tracking monitors position and activity (moto-hours) of each machine integrated within the system. Position monitoring is done by means of accelerometer principle in combination with Sigfox Geolocation tool. To enhance the level of precision, standard GPS is also used in outdoor premises. Sigfox network then sends the data for further processing. Monitoring devices are powered by long-life batteries. Furthermore, data is also collected concerning the use of the machine in time to calculate moto-hours: enabling thus better estimation of machines wear-and-tear or their optimal distribution.

Asset Management

As part of the IoT, QR or NFC codes are used to label individual devices, enabling to keep more information on the device identification as well as data from the last review. Subsequently, the data can be read via mobile device also offline.

Smart Sensoring

Special sensors are used for remote monitoring, e.g. of temperature and moisture in the relevant room, water pipe temperature, as well as measuring noise emission levels or identify the risk of potential flood. In principle, the service involves placing sensors on relevant technologies in boiler rooms and other technical rooms to provide for remote monitoring of the area. Consequently, the data is transmitted via GPS; sensors are powered by electricity.

Thermo Control

We have been using thermographic cameras to enhance Smart Sensoring capabilities: they are suitable for specific workplaces requiring thorough temperature monitoring for individual devices, such as boiler rooms or distributor boards with high energy demands. Advanced thermographic cameras combined with other sensors are able to measure temperatures at various places of the boiler room and respond with flexibility in case the thresholds set have been exceeded. Besides, it is also a way to monitor deviations from ordinary operation of the boiler room, enabling thus early problem identification.

Remote Metering

Remote Metering ensures remote monitoring of metering devices, to provide the customer with an overview of everyday consumptions or even consumptions at different times during the day without the need of visual metering. Consequently, this allows for early identification of possible deviations or accidents and prevents huge financial losses (e.g. resulting from water leakages, etc.). In this case also, the data is transmitted via Sigfor network; measuring sensors are battery-powered.

Smart Cleaning

Smart Cleaning’s fundamental feature is best described by the notion of “dynamic cleaning”. Using motion and CO2 sensors, it enables monitoring of the real use of the premises (e.g. meeting rooms, warehouses, etc.) and, as a result, deploying cleaning staff efficiently. In practice, this means more frequent cleaning of frequently used rooms while less frequent cleaning of those rooms that are not used so much. Furthermore, we are able to respond flexibly to temporary arrangements, if relevant: i.e. identifying the case an exceptional conference is held in a meeting room which has not been so frequently used, and temporary increasing the cleaning frequency.

The coordinator is thus provided with a perfect overview

Coordinators can consult the report at any time to check current staff attendance at the branches under their responsibility. Furthermore, they will also find out scheduled time for cleaning. In case scheduled cleaning time has already started, the coordinator is provided with the following data:

  • In case the employee came on time to the workplace, green circle is displayed with precise time of arrival. 
  • In case the employee was delayed compared to the scheduled time of cleaning, orange circle is displayed with the time of delayed arrival.  
  • In case the employee did not come to the workplace, red circle is displayed, referring to the employee’s absence. Should this occur, the coordinator can respond immediately (i.e. contact the relevant employee or sending there a substitute)
